Alex Freeman scored his first World Cup goal in the United States' 2-0 win over Australia, a result that secured the hosts' place in the knockout stage. The 21-year-old defender has quickly become one of the standout stories of the USA's tournament.
Freeman's rise has been sharp. Around the time of the 2022 World Cup, he was still in Orlando City's reserve setup and was not seen as a likely national-team regular. Since Mauricio Pochettino took charge in 2024, however, Freeman has moved rapidly into a central role, with the coach crediting both the player and Orlando's staff for his development.
His story also carries a family angle: Freeman is the son of former NFL player Antonio Freeman, a Super Bowl winner with Green Bay. Rather than being defined by that background, Alex is building his own identity in a different football code, helped by family support and a growing belief that his route into soccer was the right one.
The defender has also become a social-media favourite after a viral post from his step-sister helped turn him into a fan talking point. For USA supporters, the bigger question now is whether Freeman's breakout can continue when the tournament moves into its higher-pressure knockout phase.
