Aston Martin are set to introduce a major car upgrade at the Hungarian Grand Prix, targeting a lighter chassis and a revised aerodynamic package. Adrian Newey has framed the update as the team’s first meaningful performance step of the season.
The changes are expected to include a new nose, heavily revised aero surfaces and a slightly altered rear suspension, while the front suspension is set to remain largely the same. Newey’s approach has been to delay smaller updates in favour of one larger package, after the team spent the early part of the season near the back of the grid.
Newey has linked Aston Martin’s struggles to a rushed design cycle, excess weight, internal process issues and difficulties integrating the Honda power unit. He also acknowledged that the team’s simulation and development tools are still being improved, which makes it harder to put a precise number on the expected performance gain.
The upgrade also carries wider significance for Fernando Alonso, whose future beyond the season is not settled. Newey indicated that showing clear progress could help persuade Alonso to continue, but the actual value of the Hungary package will only become clear once it runs on track.
