Carys Phillips is set to make Barbarians history when she plays against Wales at Allianz Stadium on Saturday. She and her father Rowland Phillips will become the first father and daughter to have represented the famous invitational club.
The moment links two Welsh rugby careers across generations. Rowland, a Wales flanker from 1987 to 1990 and later a Wales assistant coach, played for the Barbarians against East Midlands in 2003 after coming out of retirement.
Carys arrives with deep international experience of her own: 87 Wales caps, four World Cup campaigns, and club spells with Ospreys, Bristol, Harlequins and Worcester. The fixture carries an unusual edge because she will be facing Wales after being part of their Six Nations squad this year without appearing on the field.
The Barbarians squad also underlines the club’s invitational identity, with players from multiple nations. Ruby Tui is listed on the wing, Emily Chancellor will captain the side, and the front-row group includes Bryony Cleall, Christine Belise, Laura Delgado and Charli Jacobi.
For editors, the wider angle is not only the family landmark but what it says about the growing visibility of women’s Barbarians fixtures: heritage, elite mixed-nationality squads and personal rugby stories are now intersecting on a bigger stage.
