Lewis Hamilton won the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix for his first Formula 1 victory with Ferrari. The result also gave Ferrari its first grand prix win since Mexico in October 2024.
A virtual safety car helped Hamilton gain track position with a cheaper pit stop, putting him ahead of Mercedes drivers George Russell and Kimi Antonelli. Even so, the source report says Mercedes accepted Hamilton likely had the race pace to beat them without that timing advantage, although he would have needed to make the passes on track.
The victory carries extra weight because Hamilton had openly struggled during his first Ferrari season and later described a winter reset that included stepping away from social media and increasing his training. At 41, he also joined a small group of drivers in their 40s to win an F1 race since 1958.
Ferrari’s Barcelona upgrade adds to the story. The team had already brought a major update in Miami, and the latest package appeared to matter on a circuit where engine power was not the only decisive factor. Hamilton’s qualifying comparison with Charles Leclerc has also improved this season, suggesting the win may be part of a wider recovery rather than a one-off moment.
