The Orlando Magic have waived forward Jonathan Isaac, reducing their financial commitment by $6.5 million before his $14.5 million salary was due to become guaranteed. The move leaves $8 million owed to Isaac, and Orlando has not stretched that amount over seven seasons.
That contract detail matters because, under the reported structure, Isaac could still return to the Magic if he does not join another team in free agency. For now, though, the transaction marks a major roster and cap decision involving a player Orlando originally selected sixth overall in the 2017 draft.
Isaac’s time with the Magic was shaped by availability as much as potential. He reached 70 games in only two of his nine seasons with the franchise and missed the entire 2020-21 and 2021-22 campaigns after a torn left ACL.
Last season, Isaac appeared in 52 games and averaged 2.6 points and 2.5 rebounds. A sprained left knee kept him out of Orlando’s final 22 regular-season games and the team’s first-round playoff loss to Detroit, adding another layer to the Magic’s offseason evaluation.
