Mount gives Manchester United an internal midfield option

Mason Mount has emerged as a credible internal answer to Manchester United’s midfield question after starting pre-season strongly alongside new signing Andrey Santos. The evidence is still limited, but his role has given Michael Carrick another option before the transfer window closes.

United have already added Santos and Youri Tielemans for a reported combined £83m, while Manuel Ugarte is set for a lengthy spell out with a knee injury and Casemiro has departed after his contract expired. That mix has kept attention on possible further midfield business, including reported links with Alex Scott, Tyler Adams, Manu Kone and Aurelien Tchouameni.

Mount’s case is built on balance. Santos has been used as the deeper presence, which has allowed Mount to carry more of the progression and pressing responsibility in the opening friendlies against Wrexham and Rosenborg. The 5-0 win in Trondheim, where Shea Lacey opened the scoring, also featured Mount briefly wearing the captain’s armband after Harry Maguire went off.

The bigger question is whether two summer friendlies are enough to alter recruitment plans. Mount’s United career has already included injury disruption, but with a contract running to 2028 and Champions League football increasing the workload, his versatility and leadership could become important if Carrick decides the midfield solution is already in the squad.
